5 hikes in LA to hit your daily step goals
Ascot Hills Park
A hidden gem offering many short to medium-distance trails, a stunning view of downtown as well as ample parking (and restrooms!). It is never too crowded especially just before sunset. That is also when you can hear the coyotes sing. There are multiple loops that can meet whatever your fitness level is. Just make sure to leave shortly after sunset as the gates will close for the night.
Distance: 3,4km
Fern Dell Nature Trail to Griffith Observatory
This is basically two trails in one. Fern Dell Trail is a short walk along a man-made stream surrounded by beautiful plants and old trees. There is a big picnic area, great for families, which leads to the beginning of the Firetrails taking you up a steep path to the Observatory. I recommend going up the West trail which will give stunning views of the Hollywood sign and takes you all the way up to Griffith Observatory. On the way back use the Eastern part of the trail that will lead back to the picnic area. Parking and toilets are available. It is a quite strenuous walk without much shade, so bring enough water and sunscreen.
Distance: 3km
Hollywood Sign Hike and Bronson Caves
If you are an experienced hiker then this hike is for you! This combines two sights at once: the Bronson Caves (seen in Batman) and the iconic Hollywood sign. The hike starts at the Brush Canyon trail with a short detour to the Bronson caves (on your right). After a short out and back to the caves follow the Brush Canyon Trail until it joins the Mulholland Trail. Turn left and follow this trail all the way to Mount Lee Drive. Now turn right again and follow the steep road all the way to the end until you reach the back of the Hollywood sign. The vistas on this hike are incredible: you’ll see DTLA, the Hollywood reservoir and also a glimpse of the valley. Be aware that this hike is long and strenuous. Bring enough water and protect your self from the sun. This hike is best done in the morning as it can get crowded. Parking is available on Canyon Drive in Hollywoodland. Pro tip: don’t park in the big parking lot, park along the road under some trees just before the parking lot.
Distance: around 12km return
Note: if you zoom to the start of the hike you’ll see the Bronson Cave Trail which starts at the exact same spot but takes a right turn. Find the map here.
Runyon Canyon
A classic hike that is a traveler’s favourite to break a quick sweat. This hike is located close to Rodeo drive and probably is the best option for you if you don’t have a car as it is easily accessible with public transport. This green area has three entrances: one in the north (Mulholland Entrance) and two in the south (Vista and Fuller Entrance). Choose whichever one you prefer and is easier to get to for you. The park offers stunning views and has some steep parts, a paved path but also a rugged one. You can choose between multiple loops. If you travel by car, please be mindful to park only in designated areas.
